Workonline Communications strengthens pan-African connectivity at Equinix Johannesburg data centre, expanding high-performance services and bringing global content providers to Africa through its longstanding relationship with Equinix.

Workonline Communications, one of Africa’s leading independent IP transit providers, has expanded its reach with a new Point of Presence (PoP) at Equinix’s JN1 data centre in Johannesburg. This deployment highlights the deepening of the strategic collaboration between Workonline and Equinix and marks a significant step in improving connectivity and driving digital transformation across Africa.

A longstanding relationship

The relationship between Workonline Communications and Equinix has been one of mutual growth and success. Since 2013, when Workonline established its PoP in Equinix’s London data centre, the companies have worked together to establish an intercontinental bridge between Africa, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Building on that success, the Johannesburg JN1 deployment is the latest extension of this collaborative effort to enhance connectivity between South Africa and the rest of the world.

“We’ve seen tremendous success in Asia and Europe through our partnership with Equinix, and we’re excited to bring that same level of connectivity excellence to Africa,” said Benjamin Deveaux, Head of Business Development at Workonline Communications Group. “Our collaboration with Equinix allows us to offer our customers unmatched performance, low-latency routing, and the ability to scale seamlessly across multiple continents.”

Supporting Equinix’s portfolio in South Africa

Equinix’s JN1 data centre in Johannesburg is key to Equinix’s service portfolio in South Africa. Workonline plays a central role in providing high-performance Internet access services to Equinix’s customers, enabling businesses to access reliable, low-latency connectivity. This collaboration will help meet the growing demand for cloud services and interconnection solutions in the region, providing critical infrastructure to support enterprises, content providers, and telecom operators.

“As Equinix expands its presence in South Africa, Workonline will continue to provide the essential connectivity services needed to support their customers and drive innovation across Africa,” said Sandile Dube, Managing Director for South Africa at Equinix. “Workonline’s expertise and longstanding commitment to the African market make them a strategic partner for Equinix as we continue to build out our African ecosystem.”

Cross-connect density: A proven model for success

Workonline’s extensive cross-connect density in markets like the United Kingdom serves as a benchmark for what can be achieved in Africa. The company’s success in connecting a wide array of global Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) to Equinix’s facilities has enabled it to offer unparalleled performance and efficiency. With Johannesburg now online, Workonline is poised to replicate this success across Africa, bringing the same benefits of low-latency connectivity and global reach to the continent.

“By offering an extensive network of cross-connects in Equinix’s data centres, we are attracting large CDNs and international service providers to expand in Africa,” said Deveaux. “This model has been proven in London, and we’re confident it will succeed in Johannesburg as well, providing critical infrastructure to support the growth of the digital economy.”

Future plans for expansion

Looking ahead, Workonline is focused on further expansion across the continent. The collaboration between Workonline and Equinix will continue to drive connectivity improvements, supporting businesses looking to connect in the countries in which we are present. Future expansions for Workonline are expected to mirror the success seen in South Africa and Nigeria, entrenching Workonline as a key player in Africa’s growing digital ecosystem.
